Xcelerator

Xcelerator was a prototype coaster when it opened in the Boardwalk in 2002.  Designed by Intamin AG, Xcelerator used hydraulic power to launch riders 0-82 MPH in 2.3 seconds, vertically up a 205 foot tower, dropping vertically back to earth before speeding through two overbanked turns.  Hold on!

The launch can really take your breath away.

Xcelerator is themed to the 1950 hot rods which were so popular in southern California.

The theming is continued through the ride’s entrance and shop.  Very nicely done.

  1. I loved the colors of this coaster. Very carnival-y...or maybe cotton candy? The theme is great, and I believe it updated the Boardwalk's theme, from a beach-oriented theme with cutout fish to a 50's style boardwalk complete with classic cars and...Elvis? As El Toro is a great replacement to the troubled Viper in Great Adventure, Xcelerator is an excellent replacement to the nightmarish Windjammer.

Trivia: This was one of the three coasters featured on the BrainRush, a ripoff of Cash Cab of the infamous CN Real block on Cartoon Network everyone hates. But still, the roller coaster is great, I don't it (or Silver Bullet nor Boomerang)gained notoriety to this roller coaster version of Cash Cab, as, ironically, the former Thunderbolt coaster at Coney Island gained notoriety when featured in the popular movie Annie Hall.

What I meant to say was with the addition of Xcelerator, the Boardwalk's theme has slightly changed since it opened. It currently has a toss around theme of the 1950's, Hawaii (I think), carnival, and its original nautical theming from 1996.

  3. Love this ride. My daughter's 6th grade class is going there this week and she's finally tall enough to ride it. I know she'll love it too! She's a thrill seeker, like her mom.
